What have you done?

Letter to the editor

“And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?”

These profound words were written by a British youngster many years ago. What have you done? When I ask that question many will say, “I contribute through my church” or “I write a check.”

But, honestly, did Jesus only perform miracles on the Sabbath or in the temple or toss a few coins? What is the meaning of Christmas if we don’t carry it in our hearts and actions throughout the year?

“Another year over, a new one begun.”

What have you given of yourself? From what I have read and heard in sermons, Christianity is about giving of oneself, not just a few hours on a Sunday, but seven days a week, as Jesus did.

There are many community-based organizations which cry out, yet we turn away because we have no time, life is a hassle, etc. Giving of yourself is the greatest thing a Christian can do, yet it is so easy. Right here, in Greer there is Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis, Lions Sertoma, Shriners and a host of other volunteer organizations. As a Kiwanian, I know the wonderful feeling of helping my fellow man, hands-on.

Maybe hands-on is not for you. Maybe one of the other organizations is more suited for you. The important thing is to find out! Go to them, break bread with them and see where you can fit in best.

For Christ’s sake, do something for your fellow man. Have a Merry Christmas and carry it into your life and the lives of your brethren. God bless.
