Greer City Council voted 5-1 to acquire the Greer Golf and Country Club Tuesday night.

Councilmember Jay Arrowood was opposed and Wayne Griffin was not present at the meeting.

“This does not fit,” Arrowood said, referencing the city’s plans. “It doesn’t get us to point B. It’s taking us off on a tangent.”

The city will be assuming ownership of 159.3 acres with the acquisition.

“We are not purchasing it for a purchase price,” said City Administrator Ed Driggers. “We are acquiring the debt and the assets of the country club.”

Driggers said he is hoping the city will be able to close on the property by the end of January.

“They came to us,” Driggers said. “It wasn’t on our radar.

“We can’t make long-term obligations because we can’t bind future councils,” he said. “We can protect the land. That’s an objective of ours, to protect the land. It is our intent to continue to operate that as a golf course, but it will be a municipal golf course. We hope that we can do that successfully. If we can’t, then council would have to make future decisions about what that could possibly mean.”
